💪 Module 4: Practice & Exercises

Time to Strengthen Your Creative Muscles!

🎯 What You Will Do

🎮 Let's Start with Fun Warm-Up Games!

These quick exercises will wake up your creative brain. Ready? Let's go!

Exercise 1: Alternative Uses Game

Challenge: Think of as many uses as possible for a BRICK (other than building!)

⏱️ 3-Minute Challenge

3:00

Write your ideas here (aim for 10+ ideas!):

More Creative Uses for a Brick:

  • Paperweight for outdoor documents
  • Emergency hammer to break glass
  • Base for a small table or shelf
  • Doorstop to keep door open
  • Exercise weight for fitness
  • Canvas for painting artwork
  • Step stool (stack several bricks)
  • Garden border decoration
  • Heat retainer (heat it and use for warmth)
  • Weapon for self-defense (emergency!)
  • Musical instrument (tap different parts)
  • Bookend for heavy books

💡 The goal is QUANTITY of ideas! More ideas = More creative thinking!

Exercise 2: Connection Challenge

Challenge: Find creative connections between these TWO things:

🍕

PIZZA

💼

BUSINESS MEETING

How are Pizza and Business Meetings similar? Think creatively!

Creative Connections:

  • Both have multiple "toppings" or topics to discuss!
  • Both are better when shared with a group
  • Both can be "delivered" to your location
  • Both need the right "ingredients" to be successful
  • Both can be "hot" (urgent) or "cold" (relaxed)
  • Both are sliced into sections/agenda items
  • Too much of either can make you feel stuffed/overwhelmed!

💡 Finding unusual connections builds creative thinking!

💼 Real Workplace Scenarios - Apply Your Skills!

Now let's practice with actual situations you might face at work.

Scenario 1: The Budget Cut Problem

Situation: You're the HR manager. Your company just cut the training budget by 50%, but employees still need skills development. Your boss asks: "How can we continue training without spending much money?"

🎯 Your Creative Challenge:

Use SCAMPER to generate solutions. Fill in at least one idea for each:

S - Substitute: What can you replace expensive trainers with?

C - Combine: What can you combine with training?

E - Eliminate: What expensive parts can you remove?

Creative Solutions Using SCAMPER:

  • Substitute: Replace paid trainers with internal experts (peer-to-peer learning)
  • Combine: Combine training with regular team meetings (learning sessions)
  • Adapt: Adapt free YouTube courses and create discussion groups
  • Modify: Change from 2-day workshops to 30-minute daily sessions
  • Put to Other Use: Use project work as training (learn by doing)
  • Eliminate: Remove venue costs by going fully online
  • Reverse: Instead of company teaching, encourage self-learning with incentives

Real Example: Wipro created "Talent Transformation" program where senior employees teach junior ones - zero external cost, but huge impact!

Scenario 2: The Team Conflict

Situation: Two team members, Sharma and Khan, constantly argue during meetings. They have different working styles - Sharma wants detailed planning, Khan prefers quick action. Team productivity is suffering.

🎯 Your Creative Challenge:

Use Six Thinking Hats to analyze this problem:

🔴 Red Hat (Feelings): How might each person be feeling?

🟡 Yellow Hat (Benefits): What's good about each approach?

🟢 Green Hat (Creative Solution): How can you use both styles?

Six Thinking Hats Analysis:

🟢 White Hat (Facts): Sharma likes planning, Khan likes action. Both want success.

🔴 Red Hat (Feelings): Sharma feels Khan is reckless; Khan feels Sharma wastes time

⚫ Black Hat (Risks): Team could split, project could fail, morale will drop

🟡 Yellow Hat (Benefits): Sharma prevents mistakes, Khan drives momentum

🟢 Green Hat (Ideas): Create a hybrid approach - "Plan on Monday, Execute rest of week"

🔵 Blue Hat (Decision): Assign complementary roles - Sharma plans, Khan executes

Creative Solution: Instead of choosing one style, create a system where BOTH styles work together! Sharma becomes project planner, Khan becomes implementation leader. Their differences become strength, not weakness!

Scenario 3: The Innovation Challenge

Situation: You work in a traditional manufacturing company making steel pipes. Your CEO says: "We need to innovate or we'll lose to competitors. Give me ONE creative idea to transform our business."

🎯 Your Creative Challenge:

Think beyond the obvious. What unconventional ideas can you suggest?

⏱️ 5-Minute Fast Thinking

5:00

Creative Innovation Ideas:

  • Solution 1 - Smart Pipes: Add IoT sensors to pipes that detect leaks and send alerts to smartphones. Sell "intelligent plumbing systems"!
  • Solution 2 - Pipe Art: Partner with artists to create decorative pipes for modern interior design (exposed industrial style is trending!)
  • Solution 3 - Modular Furniture: Use pipe manufacturing to create customizable furniture kits (urban startup offices love industrial look!)
  • Solution 4 - Green Pipes: Develop pipes from recycled materials, market as eco-friendly option
  • Solution 5 - Subscription Model: Instead of selling pipes, rent them with maintenance service included

Real Example: Hindalco (aluminum company) didn't just sell aluminum - they created designer aluminum sheets for architects and car manufacturers. They transformed a commodity into a premium product! That's creative thinking!

🎯 Quick-Fire Challenges

Answer these quick questions to sharpen your creative reflexes!

Challenge 1: The "What If" Game

What if... employees could work from anywhere in the world?

List 3 creative opportunities this creates:

Creative Opportunities:

  • Hire global talent without relocation costs
  • Create 24/7 work cycles across time zones
  • Reduce office rent, invest in employee tools
  • Attract talent who value work-life balance
  • Open offices in low-cost countries

Challenge 2: Reverse Thinking

Normal Question: "How can we increase customer satisfaction?"
Reverse Question: "How can we make customers REALLY unhappy?" (Then do the opposite!)

List 3 ways to make customers unhappy (we'll reverse these!):

Ways to Make Customers Unhappy → Reversed Solutions:

  • Make them wait forever → Solution: Respond within 1 hour!
  • Give complicated answers → Solution: Use simple, clear language!
  • Never follow up → Solution: Proactive check-ins after service!
  • Ignore their feedback → Solution: Act on suggestions quickly!
  • Hidden charges → Solution: Complete transparency in pricing!

💡 Reverse thinking helps you see problems from a fresh angle!

Challenge 3: Random Word Association

Problem: Improve employee engagement
Random Word: TREE 🌳

How can the concept of a TREE inspire ideas for employee engagement? Think metaphorically!

Tree-Inspired Employee Engagement Ideas:

  • Roots: Create strong foundation - clear values and culture
  • Trunk: Strong leadership support system
  • Branches: Multiple career growth paths (not just one ladder!)
  • Leaves: Individual employees, each important to the whole
  • Growth Rings: Celebrate years of service with meaningful recognition
  • Seasons: Allow different work phases - intense periods and rest periods
  • Seeds: Mentorship program where seniors nurture new talent

💡 Random word association breaks mental patterns and sparks new ideas!

🏆 Your Creative Thinking Score

How Many Exercises Did You Complete?

1-3 Exercises: Good start! Keep practicing daily.
4-6 Exercises: Excellent! Your creative thinking is improving!
